This earthquake and tsunami combined to completely destroy this port, with waves engulfing nearly the entire town and reaching fields you would not think possible to reach with seawater. As the waves came inland, the giant agricultural fields acted as troughs for the water to flow through, offering up little to no elevation changes or resistance. They helped the waves to bypass higher areas and the lucky homes atop them which you can see in the images as well. The farmers and townspeople were helpless and terrified as their entire way of life was simply covered by the ocean, and could only watch in horror and hope they were high or far enough away to avoid the waves. Unfortunately, there were no positive satellite images of our focus area while this flooding was occuring, but it is still very evident how much destruction truly occurred here. If you are still not convinced however, below is an eyewitness account of what actually occurred in the port town of Sōma and how scared these residents truly were as their city was engulfed in water. It also shows how inland these waves came and the strength they possessed, as the video ended with a boat being pulled into the backyard of a home surrounded in water.
